Workshop 2: Linking themes to the impact of Angles, Movement and Shots
High angle - makes the character 'Otherworld Wybie' look small, weak and vulnerable.
P.O.V 'Other Mother' - Dominant and powerful.
The audience feels - Powerful, we are looking down on Wybie through Other Mother's P.O.V sad/innocent for Wybie - he looks small, sad and Innocent, first characters in another world to suggest something is not right.
Directors - Purpose makes us feel sorry for Wybie. Makes audience think that maybe the other Mother isn't nice - foreshadowing.
In the other shot with the 'Other Wybie' and the 'Other Mother', High angle shots are used effectively to show the theme 'Looks can be deceiving' This can be demonstrated through a high angle shot from the P.O.V of the 'Other Mother', She is looking down the front porch steps at a scared 'Other Wybie'.
This makes the audience feel sorry for 'Other Wybie' and make the 'Other Mother' seem powerful.
The purpose of this scene was to make the audience think that maybe the other Mother isn't so nice after all. Combined with the use of lighting, 'Other Wybie' is in a warm lightened scene but is surrounded by darkness, their director has created an atmosphere that suggests that something is not right. This reminds the viewer of the other scene where Coraline was looking up at the 'Other mother' horrified, she throws her through a magical portal and into a locked room. This shows that looks can be deceiving because The Other Mother wasn't as nice as Coraline had hoped she would be.
In the second picture, the scene was on a dutch tilt which gives the audience a sense of fear because dutch tilts are mostly used in shots to inform the viewers that something bad is about to happen. the audience is looking through the doll's point of view and shows that Coraline is trying to find the doll and that the doll is watching her every move. The director did this to show that the doll is informing Coraline to go to the portal which leads to the Other World. The lighting is dark and gloomy which makes the mood and atmosphere seem intense and creepy.

Science - Heart Dissection
- What have we been learning about?
We have been learning about the Circulatory System and the different parts that make up our whole Circulatory System.
- Why are we dissecting a heart?
We directed a heart so we can see what the parts of the heart actually look like up-close and to understand how our hearts work more clearly while looking at it in real life.
Arteries - takes blood away from the heart.
Atrium - entryways where blood enters from each side of the heart, from the veins.
Valves - one-way gates, it only lets blood move in one direction. Helpful especially when pushing against gravity.
Heart Strings - Strong fibres that hold the valves in place.
Septum - separates the left and right side of the heart.
Veins - takes blood back to the heart.
Ventricles - V-shaped cavities which push the blood into arteries to take away from the heart.
Muscled walls - strong muscles to help squeeze and push the blood around the body. the left side of the heart has more muscles.
I, unfortunately, didn't get to dissect a heart because I wasn't at school at the time that they did dissect the hearts. I was really sad that I couldn't get the chance to dissect and look at a heart up-close because I really wanted to learn more about our hearts while also having the chance to the dissect one.

Workshop 1:Unpacking themes and ideas
Theme/idea - something that links throughout the story.
Looks can be deceiving - things aren't always what they seem.
Example 1: The Beldam/The Other Mother
-She starts off as good/kind but is revealed to be an evil soul devouring metal spider demon.
-Shows theme because the other mother changes gradually over time so that Coraline and the audience don't notice.
-Important to the story because it helps the audience understand Coraline's choice when she realises that having everything perfect wont make he happy.
Example 2: The Other world and The Real world
-The other world is a perfect web/trap to trap Coraline, whereas the real world is boring but safe.
-Shows theme because even though the other world seems better in every way, the real world is actually better/safer because it isn't a trap.
-Important to help the audience understand why Coraline goes back to the real world.
SEXXXY Paragrph
Statement - In Coraline, themes and ideas are used effectively.
Evidence - For instance, the theme 'looks can be deceiving' is shown through the character of the Other mother. The Other mother starts kind, but is revealed to be a soul devouring demon.
Explanation (audience) - This makes the audience feel that we shouldn't trust things or people that seem perfect at first glance.
Explanation (director) - This was done to make the audience feel weary or develop a sense of caution towards new situations.
Explanation (compare) - Coinciding with this is the use of colour to show the Other Mother is becoming more evil. At the start she was surrounded by warm colours that make us feel safe, but by the end it was dark with neon green which make her seem dangerous.
Your Link - This theme is also shown through the changes in the other world as it is revealed to be a spider web design to catch Coraline.

Film Study-Coraline Notes
Opening Scene:
Music - Creepy,Quiet, similar to a music box. Repeated lyrics “dreaming”.
Perspective (P.O.V) - looking through the other mother’s point of view. We know it's her by seeing her hands that are made out of needles.
Close Up Shots - used to focus on the doll and not the other mother.
Lighting/Colour - It is dark and dim. It only has one source of light which is coloured green. This helps to create a creepy, dark and old atmosphere.
Setting (Pink Palace-Real World):
Music - Gentle, Calming, Happy, Harmonised, Sung by little children and the lyrics are made up words. Makes a happy and calm atmosphere. Then the music started to change and build drama, the music got faster and louder.
Coraline (main Character) - She is sassy, moody, adventurous and stubborn. Coraline stands out because she is always wearing bright coloured clothing and she also has bright blue hair. Her brightly coloured clothing helps us focus more on her in the real world because it shows that she is different than the others in the real world.
Colour/Lighting - Dull, dark, grey, boring. It creates a very moody and unappealing atmosphere, it makes the house in the real world look quite boring and sad. The house itself looks old and abandoned. It's not a place where Coraline wants to be.
Real Parents - They look dull, tired and sad. They are workaholics and that's why they don't spend much time with Coraline.
Dutch Tilt - This shot was used when Coraline was looking for the doll and we were looking through the doll’s point of view.
The Other World:
Colour/Lighting - The lighting is as bright and colourful as Coraline and that makes for a fun, appealing, warm and inviting atmosphere. Coraline doesn't stand out anymore but she does stand out for a different reason, she is the only one who doesn't have button eyes.
Other Parents - Fun, active, enthusiastic, happy and apart from their button eyes, they look more healthy and energetic.
Music - the music sounds more suspenseful and creepier, it doesn't really match the theme of the scene that we are seeing.
The Real neighbours:
Colour - Sad, dusty, boring, grey, Dull Colours. It has a dull, grey and dark colour palette. The colours looked sad and mournful.
Lighting - The lighting looked poor, dark and gloomy, it created a boring and dull atmosphere.
Music - The music was slightly creepy but it sounded quite bland, it was also in a medium pace. The music became upbeat and sounded like Latin styled music.
Setting - The trees in the background looked dead, everything looked old and run down but it also looked quite rustic. The house looked dark because it was in a basement. It looked old and dated.
Characters - Mr. Bobinsky was a "drunk" Russian man who is quite flexible and liked performing but he was also weird and awkward. Ms.Spink and Ms.Forcible argue a lot but they are similar in some ways, they liked performing because they are actresses, they are confident and attention seekers.
Coraline doesn't seem to like them but they are certainly better that writing.
The Other neighbours:
Colour - Bright colour palette, it looked friendly and inviting. The colours was dark but in a good way, everything was shiny and vibrant.
Lighting - The lighting was warm and had a yellow colour. Warm lighting, they used spotlights to focus on the characters.
Music - The music was loud, joyful, fun and playful. it was energetic, fun, and entertaining.
Setting - The houses looked brand new. everything was organised, colourful, bright, fun and joyful. The theatre was clean and tidy, It was grand, large and everything was in good condition.
Characters - Mr.Bobnsky looked a lot more tidy and colourful, it was entertaining and fun to watch him perform, he was nice to Coraline and he finally gets her name right. Ms.Spink and Ms.Forcible transformed into younger, fitter, more attractive versions of themselves, they were talented as well.
Coraline liked them more and is enthusiastic to have them as her neighbours.
The Beldam (Other Mother):
Colour - It was dark but still colourful, there was lots of purple and pink. everything started to fade to white.
Lighting - the lighting was dark, cold and it felt unsafe.
Music - The Music was slower, a lot more quiet and creepy. The music was very quiet and suspicious.
Setting - there were a lot of bugs but mostly beetles, everything was a beetle including the chocolate and furniture. The house transforms from the perfect house to a giant, polluted spiderweb.
