Mixing & Dissolving

Mixture - A substance made by combining/mixing two or more substances together. 

Dissolving - When a substance becomes part of a liquid.


Mixing and Dissolving (Experiment)

We started our experiment by getting the equipment we needed.

- A large beaker 

- A smaller beaker

- A spatula

- Granulated sugar

We then put 50ml of cold water in the big beaker, we put a 1 spatula of sugar in and started stirring the solution. we timed how long It will take for the sugar to dissolve in the cold water. we started the timer as soon as we put in the sugar and stopped the timer as soon as we don't see any granules of sugar and have made sure the sugar is fully dissolved.

We did the same thing with the hot water with exact same measurements but ended up with completely different results.

We then did the experiment without stirring and got completely different results on how long it took for the sugar to dissolve with the help of stirring and without.

Chemicals - Matter (Can Experiment)



This week in Chemical, we are learning about matter.

Heated Can and Coldwater Experiment
We have conducted an experiment using Cans with hot water and buckets with cold water to see what would happen when you put a heated can in cold water.

We started by boiling the Can with hot water and waiting for lots of steam to come out of the top, we then put the Can with boiling water in the cold water and it immediately crushed the Can. 

How did this happen?
When we heated the water in the can, it turned into steam. When you put the can upside down in cold water, the steam condenses and the Can fill with hot gas, contracts because of the changes in pressure and temperature.

Chemicals - Matter

This week in Chemicals, we are learning about Matter and Particle Theory. We have learnt lots of thing about Matter but what is Particle Theory?

Particle Theory

Particle Theory is about how particles in things such as solid, liquid and gas move and interact with each other. All matter is made out of particles, whether if its a solid, liquid or gas and all particles in a pure substance are the same. Ther is a space between all particles and the more solid an object is, the tighter the space between the particles are. All particles are always moving and liquids and gases move more freely than solids since solid particles can only vibrate instead of moving around freely on its own. There are attractive forces between particles and solids have the most attractive force because it holds all the particles together. Temperature affects the speed at which particles move, the more kinetic energy and heat are made the more it will affect the speed of which the particles move and the more cold and freezing the particles are, the more it slows down the kinetic energy, therefore an object solidifies.

Diffusion

Diffusion is the movement of particles from high concentration to low concentration. An example of Diffusion is when someone sprays perfume on themselves, the people near that person will smell the perfume first and other people further from the person will smell it last.

Experiment

We have used potassium permanganate to see if particles move slower or faster in cold or warm water.
I have noticed that particles move slower in cold water and particles move quicker in warm water.

Visual Arts - Photomontage








In the past few weeks in Visual Arts, we have been doing Photomatages that are inspired by Hannah Höch's work. its been fun experimenting with images and combining unusual pictures together to create a piece of art and while making these kinds of art, I realize that art doesn't need to be perfect and clean, it can be abstract and quite messy but still have a deep meaning behind it, even though the meaning that is portrayed by the artist may not be visible in the work of art, the artist might have included it in their own unique way and that's what makes an artwork original.

Here are some of my own artwork/photomontages that were inspired by Hannah Höch's photomontages.




This is an artwork that I called "Hanahaki decease" which means unrequited or one-sided love. When a person experiences one-sided love, he/she will start caughing up flowers but this is only a fictional decease so its nothing to worry about. My art basically represents all the people who have experienced unrequited love and have been badly hurt because of it. This is the only one of my art pieces that actually have a meaningand is one of my favourites.
This artwork doesn't really have a meaning because its the first one that I made. I created this using vintage illustrations and just combining unusual images to create this weird but abstract piece.
I like to call this one "Pine-Melon". It wasn't really an original idea because I saw an example of it before but I did use different fruits which as you can see are a watermelon and a pineapple. I combined this tow images and kind of edited things to fit in the photo. this piece had no meaning to it and I just thought it was funny.

 This is an artwork that also has no meaning but it did represent a bit of nature. While making this art piece I had to edit little bits and pieces to fit one image but everything look like they were supposed to be in one photo and it looked kind of clean which wasn't my gaol since Hannah Höch's work was abstract but still represents a meaning. This was still one of my better works of art because I made something that I can call my original design.




I learn a lot about Hannah Höch and her work and had lots of fun while doing it. I learnt really helpful thing about art which helped me create my own original work. This is the first I created photomontages and I feel proud of what I had done so far but I still want to improve, not just on photomontage but other art techniques and mediums that can help me create more of my own original work.

Film study - 35 second film

Before starting this film, we learnt about music, lighting, colour and camera angles that helped us make our own 30-second film. Me, Jolly Rose, Lilly and Sharney made a 35-second film about as student stealing a book from the school's library and then getting caught by a teacher. Jolly helped me with the storyline and we immediately agreed with each other on what we should do as actors. Sharney did most of the filming while me and Jolly acted as the thief (me) and the teacher (Jolly). Me and jolly did most of the editing. Filming was fun but the editing...not so much, I did most of the editing at home and had enough time to finish it off by myself.

Sustainability Report - Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction/Climate Change

- Introduction -

Greenhouse gas emissions are one of the biggest problems we are facing today. Many organizations are tracking the latest climate change science and measuring greenhouse gases trying to find ways to reduce greenhouse emissions and how they can still make power plants, road transportation and other manufacturing industries that produce little to no greenhouse gas emissions. 



(P-1) What are greenhouse gases? 

Gases in our atmosphere help trap the sun’s heat, therefore, it can sustain life on Earth. These gases allow the sun’s rays to pass through and provide heat to the Earth, but it prevents this warmth from escaping from our atmosphere. Without naturally occurring, heat-trapping gases (mainly water vapour, carbon dioxide and methane) Earth would be too cold to even sustain life and this is what causes Climate change. 

Greenhouse gas emissions cause climate change which is produced from fossil fuels, agriculture, transport, waste, power plants, deforestation, energy industry, commercial buildings, iron and steel manufacturing, chemical and petrochemical industries, oil and gas production, and coal mining, these are the examples of the things that emit most of the greenhouse gases in our environment.



(P-2) What is the effect of Greenhouse gas emissions in our environment and on the atmosphere?

The main effect of greenhouse gas emissions is Climate change. Climate Change is the result of trapped heat caused by greenhouse gases, they also cause respiratory diseases from smog and other types of air pollution. Unnatural weather patterns, increased wild and forest fires, and food supply disruption are some of the things that are mostly affected by climate change caused by greenhouse gases. Climate change takes a huge part in animal endangerment and different species of animals disappearing. Because of Climate change, animals such as polar bears are losing their habitats and also starving due to the lack of ice which they depend on for getting food from the sea. Animals are not the only ones affected by climate change, we humans are also affected by these changing weather patterns. People with asthma and other respiratory problems will have difficulty breathing because of the heat, smog and other air pollutants trapped in the atmosphere causing hundreds of thousands of people getting sick every single day.

 


(P-3) What can we do to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and climate change?

There are a lot of examples of ways on how we can help reduce the amount of climate change and greenhouse gasses that are currently occurring in our environment. Examples of how we can reduce the amount of Climate change and Greenhouse gasses are avoiding the use of fossil fuels, planting more trees, finding more sustainable and environmentally helpful ways to produce energy or even creating campaigns that focus on getting rid of Climate change and Greenhouse gas emissions throughout the years, and these are just a few of the ways we can reduce the number of greenhouse gasses and climate change and even by just doing and changing these few things we do in our everyday lives, we can definitely make a greater future for the next generations to come.


 -Conclusion -

In conclusion, Climate change and Greenhouse gas emissions have a huge impact on us and our environment and as you can see, we can do a lot of things to help reduce the amount of climate change and gas emissions but we are just not acting on it and sometimes ignoring the fact that problems such as climate change are getting worse, so if we can just change a few things in the way we treat our environment it could make a huge difference and can greatly affect and help reduce the amount of Climate change and Greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere.
