DTE Project | Gamefroot (Hypogeal)

These past few weeks during this term, we have been learning about robotics, coding and game development in DTE, we also learnt about using Makey Makey kits and other things that include coding as well. At the end of the term, our group had to come up with a project that includes the things we have learnt in the past few weeks, we decided on developing a game based on Halloween and the dinosaur game you can play when there's no internet. We used Scratch and made our own game characters in it, we planned on making a controller and use Makey Makey to play the game.

Our first idea was to make a game based on the dinosaur game, it was a fairly simple game to start with so we started making the game on Scratch, we made our own characters and coded all of them ourselves.

While making our game from scratch and coding every individual character, we soon realized that the game we are making wouldn't be suitable to make using scratch, so we stopped working on our first idea and moved on to work on Gamefroot which worked really well.

We decided on making two levels, we based it on an apocalyptic world where the player must find the end while surviving as long as possible, the player will be faced with zombies and radioactive plants on the first level and robotic skeletons and lasers on the second level, the player can regain HP by obtaining mushrooms and chicken, for the rest of the game, the player needs to obtain other things too such as guns and hearts to survive, they will face obstacles that they need to jump over or kill.

While focusing on finishing the game, we realised that we still needed to make our own controller in order to play the game using the Makey Makey kits, we decided that we should just finish the game as it is and leave out our first idea of using Makey Makey to play our game.

Reflection
We worked really well as a group while making the game, each of us had our own assigned work so we wouldn't be confused about what we were supposed to be doing. we planned our game quite well and our theme was already set, our time management could improve so that we could have made our controller and still stuck with our original plan of using the Makey Makey kits, but our problem was mostly about not using the right programming tool to make our game. Everything soon went according to our plans when we started using Gamefroot, we did have to redo our whole plan but the was quite easy, I suggested that we do something that includes an apocalyptic theme and decided to name it 'Hypogeal'.

Volcano Eruption | Science

These past couple of weeks, we have been learning about volcanoes. We also have made replicas of real volcanoes of our choice from around the world. My group has chosen a volcano from the Philippines named the Taal Volcano since it recently erupted.

Project - Taal volcano

It is a caldera volcano and is currently active as of now.

Different types of volcanoes:

  • A caldera forms when a volcano erupts and then collapses, this creates a large depression.

Types of rock formations that form around the volcano.

  • Olivine Basalt which is a type of mineral.

  • Andesite

Plan

Make a border around the volcano and make it look like the volcano looks like it’s submerged in water.

We need to make it slightly taller than the bottle we’re going to use while still making it look like just

the very top of the volcano.

Making the base out of cardboard, we will roughly cut out the shape of the volcano.

Reaction: Elephant's Toothpaste

Hydrogen Peroxide and Potassium Permanganate -

Turns brown as a chemical reaction between the oxygen and the Potassium Permanganate.

Put warm water in a bottle, then put Potassium Permanganate crystals. Mix.

Add 1-2 drops of detergent to the mixture.

Find an open space.

Pour Hydrogen Peroxide in a measuring cylinder, pour till satisfied with the amount.

Then, quickly pour the Hydrogen Peroxide into the bottle, wait for the reaction.

Workshop 6 - SEXXXY Paragraphs | English

Scene - 'They don't own me'

Brainstorm
  • Angles, movement, shots, Over the shoulder
  • Music Diegetic sound
  • Lighting/colour,
  • Settings
  • Costumes + make-up
  • Character/ Dialogue
Theme - Rich vs Poor, Hope and Rebellion, Struggle for Power

What happened - Peeta and Katniss are having a conversation about how the games might affect them.
  • Angles, movement, shots, Over the shoulder - shows speaker, puts us in listeners P.O.V make us part of the conversation
  • Close up - This shows the emotion of the two-nervous, anxious, mostly Peeta.
  • Lighting/Colour - Mood - sad, gloomy - Gray, darks, blacks, dim lighting - works with c/u (close-ups) highlights emotion in faces
  • Dialogue - "I don't want them to change me" "I don't wanna be another piece in their game" If I die, I wanna still be me"
  • Atmosphere - Foreboding, Nervous, Reluctant, Hesitant - Lighting and colour2 - Dialogue 1- Close up 3
SEXXXY Paragraph

In the scene 'They don't own me', dialogue is used to create a foreboding atmosphere. Katniss and Peeta are having a conversation about how the upcoming games might affect them. This is demonstrated by the quote "I don' want them to change me", another "If I'm gonna die, I still wanna be me" spoken by Peeta. These show that Peeta has a sense that he is going to have to do things that he doesn't want to do like kill others. This makes the audience feel sorry for Peeta because he is likely going to die, or to kill others to stay alive. The director did this to make us believe that Peeta die early and that being a tribute isn't something to celebrate but a loss of personal autonomy. This work well with colour the dark colours of black and greys which add to the foreboding atmosphere. This aspect can be contrasted to when Peeta joins the Career Pack once in the game because they are cold-hearted killers which is what Peeta didn't want to be.

Workshop 5 : Music | English

Tempo - speed of the music, fast/slow/moderate
Dynamics - volume, how loud or quiet it is
Key - major (happy sound), minor (sad sound)

Rues Death: How is music used to create the atmosphere
depressing/sad/mournful/
minor, tempo-slow, dynamics-quiet, gets louder as Katniss raises her salute and District 11 riots.

What happened - Rue is killed, Katniss tries to give her body the closest to a burial that she can.
Colour/Lighting - White flowers (stands out, a symbol of innocence and purity), natural lighting, greens stand out. Rue never killed anyone, kind, compassionate, victim.
Shots/Angles - medium close-ups (Rue and Katniss) to see their emotions and facial expressions (anguish), high angle (weak and inferior, Rue, an innocent and blameless victim.)

Effect on Viewer - an atmosphere of remorse/intense sadness, as the volume increases it builds the intensity of the emotions, we see emotions are contagious, hope.

Directors Purpose - feel Katniss's emotions at that moment (remorse, anger, helplessness, acceptance, rebellion)
Symbol of 3 finger salute - is a sign of defiance and anger towards the game makers, you will not take my humanity and also a symbol of unification with those who have lost loved ones to the games.

Statement:
Music is used to create an atmosphere of sorrow and remorse in Rue's death scene. In this scene, we see Katniss dealing with the slaughter of her young friend Rue. For example, the tempo is slow, the dynamics are quiet snd the key is minor to reflect the emotional rollercoaster that Katniss is experiencing. Like the music, Katniss moves slowly and methodically to cover Rue's body in white flowers. As she finishes, the music builds in volume, showing the increasing intensity of her anger and grief towards the Capitol. This makes us understand the pain experienced by the families of the tributes when they are killed each year. This was done to enable the viewer to feel the characters' emotions. This worked well with the use of white flowers to symbolise Rue's innocence and purity and the high angle shot making her look weak and vulnerable. Combined with the music we are shown that Rue is a victim of the cruelty of the Capitol.

  • Katniss volunteers as tribute when her sister is chosen.
  • The children/parents of the district give her the three-finger salute.
  • Peeta is chosen as the male tribute.
Hope and Rebellion
3 finger salute - It is a big sign of respect for Katniss from the people of her district.
                       - Katniss is a symbol of hope for a district victor.
                       - Katniss is a symbol of rebellion because she stepped in for her sister when no one else                                 would.

Brainstorm
Rich and Poor
Symbol of Richness - Effie Trinket, extreme, make-up, wig, hat, overly colourful and flashy clothing, proper accent.
Technology - use of blood readers/scanners, projectors.
Symbol of poverty - District 12, children clothing for the reaping are their "best clothes", dresses, collared-shirt, boys wear shorts or pants, the colour of clothing is very faded from washing and reusing.
The village is falling down around them.

Close-ups
Faces - Primrose when is reaped - terror, fear.
          - Effie - joyful, confident, excited - close-up of lips when reading names.
          - Katniss - panics when  Prim is reaped, shock when she stands with Effie.
          - Peta - fear,panic,shock.

Shallow focus
the people in the background are in shallow focus when Prim and Katniss hugged, This forces the viewers to watch the characters that are in focus.

What the Viewer feels
Sorry for Primrose - it was her first time.
Katniss - she volunteered, a selfless act.
Anger toward the capital for the reaping.
We consider Effie is annoying, too happy, stuck-up, clueless.

Directors Purpose
Need to be invested in their journey/suffering
Need to be angry at Capital so that we judge them and their decisions later.
Effie is depicted as a symbol of people in the District, they are clueless, they don't see the suffering.

Themes and Ideas ( Hunger Games ) | English

The power of propaganda

propaganda

reality

Fallen - 1

Tributes - 2

1 - People who die in the games.

1 - Takes away from the reality of the situation.

2 - two brave young people

2 - its an honour

1 - Teenagers who have been killed/murdered (violence)

2 - sacrifice, punishment to the districts

Rich vs Poor

People in the Capital vs people in the Districts.

Compare the opening shot in District 12 vs Peta looking out the window at the Capital.

District 12 - Very Poor, Houses are all made of wood and are rundown, food is very little, shows in the scene where an old man was picking meat of bone, they only have one pair of good clothing, all their other clothes are worn out, old, colours are faded, grey/black - easier to not show coal dust

Capital - houses and buildings are large, made of concrete, metals, accents of gold and silver, lots of food with a variety of choices, They don’t own or have the same things, they have more than enough/excess amount of food, clothing is fancy, suits, extravagant, “fashion”, extreme, excessive.

Hope and Rebellion

Conversation with President Snow and Senica Craine

“ a little hope is a good thing, a lot of hope is dangerous.”

Conversation between Hamich and Senica

“ give them something to root for, young love.”

Struggle for power - Katniss and Peta eat the berries, Death of Rue causes the riot in District 11

Power of Propaganda - Subtle, Hunger Games film strip.

Video Clip -’ I volunteer as tribute’

In this scene, Katniss is shown tributing in place of her sister that was chosen for the hunger games in the reaping.

Hitler's Anti-semitism / Anti-jew | Social Studies

Hello everyone! This past week in Social Studies, we have been learning about the holocaust, the great depression and we have now started on the topic of why Hitler despised the Jews ( anti-semitism )

“The Jews were responsible for bringing negroes into the Rhineland with the ultimate idea of bastardising (lowering the quality of) the white race which they hate and thus lowering its cultural and political level so that the Jew might dominate.”

Hitler has said these things as to his belief that the white race is the most superior. His hatred and racism against the Jews have also led him to manipulate the public view of the Jewish race. He has manipulated the people into believing that the Jews are the ones to blame, the people believed these lies without having any knowledge or truthful information of how and what the Jewish race actually is.

Hunter Swoop | English

Top Left corner
- Dark grey clouds cover the sky making it look like a thunderstorm is about to happen, a lonely mountain peak can be seen from the distance.

Top Right corner
- The bright sky covered in colourful clouds reflect the light of the glowing sun behind it.

Bottom
- Murky waters can be seen from the edge of the bridge, no life can be seen from the dark and unclear waters of the lake.

Middle
- As I walk slowly toward the end of the bridge, I see a girl with long dark hair sitting alone, not a single sound can be heard apart from her breath, I ran and ran towards her and before I could get to the end, she looked me in the eye and jumped into the mirror-like lake, though unclear, still reflected a sight of green mountains so tall.

The Hunters Swoop | English

- Top left corner of the image
Dark trees and branches cover the background making it look like a dark black hole.

- Top right corner of the image
As the dead trees disappear into the mist and fog, Dark trees stand tall as if leading the ones behind.

- Bottom part of the image
The mirror-like lake reflects a beautiful yet frightening sight of dark dead trees, its leaves scattered as if they were being set free, another world can be seen once I looked in.

- Middle part of the image
As I walk through the misty and foggy forest, still frightened by what I have seen, I was greeted by a glistening lake reflecting all of the darkness behind me. I have thought my journey was rough yet now that I am standing here I have learned to realize that the hardships I've been through have been worth the fear when I see such I mesmerizing sight.

Complete each simile:
The cloth was as black as coal.
The wet ball was as slippery as an eel.

The Hunter Swoop | English

A Sky so cloudy, A mountain can barely be seen from behind.

Ice covers the mountains, so cold yet so bright as the snow reflects the sun's light.

A sheet of frost covers the road, clearly slippery from the ice. streaks of tire tracks from cars driving left their mark on the thin layer of ice.

everything disappears when it reaches the end of the horizon to a breathtaking view of mountains so cold and bright.

Starfish Poem | Social Studies

THE STARFISH POEM
Once upon a time, there was a wise man
who used to go to the ocean
to do his writing.
He had a habit of walking
on the beach
before he began his work.
One day he was walking along
the shore.
As he looked down the beach,
he saw a human
figure moving like a dancer.
He smiled to himself to think
of someone who would
dance to the day.
So he began to walk faster
to catch up.
As he got closer, he saw
that it was a young man
and the young man wasn't dancing,
but instead, he was reaching
down to the shore,
picking up something
and very gently throwing it
into the ocean.
As he got closer he called out,
"Good morning! What are you doing?"
The young man paused,
looked up and replied,
"Throwing starfish in the ocean."
"I guess I should have asked,
why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"
"The sun is up and the tide is going out.
And if I don't throw them in they'll die."
"But, young man, don't you realize that
there are miles and miles of beach
and starfish all along it.
You can't possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely.
Then bent down, picked up another starfish
and threw it into the sea,
past the breaking waves and said-
"It made a difference for that one."

The main message of this poem
- A single person can make such a significant change to our environment and if people start making small differences in their everyday life they would be helping more and more. other people might doubt that just throwing a single piece of rubbish won't make a difference but if more people started doing it, those small changes can turn into something big.

Crash Course Literacy - Brain dead teen | English

What makes this video convincing?
- The acting makes the video convincing and having "professional" people on set make it more realistic, they also had people protest which just adds to the realism.

    Who published this video?
    - A channel that creates fake news articles called The onion.

How are teenagers portrayed in this clip?
      - Teenagers are portrayed as lazy and brain dead because of their phones.

Why has the director cast them this way?
        - The director cast teenagers this way to make fun of the stereotype that all teenagers in this generation are lazy and anti-social because of their phones.

In whose interest is this text?
          - The director probably intended for adults/parents to watch this video and have a laugh.

Who is real in this text?
            - All of the actors are real but their characters aren't.

What social realities does this video portray?
              - The stereotype does relate to some teenagers in today's generation and the protesting in the video relates to real news as well.

              Alkaline Metals

              What is an Alkaline Metal?
              - Example of Alkaline Metals are Lithium, sodium and potassium, these metals are highly reactive and form strongly alkaline hydroxides.

Where are they on the P.Table?
              - It is in Group 1 of the periodic table which means it only has one electron.

What Reaction did we do yesterday?
              Observations
              - As soon as the Alkali metal (Sodium) was dropped in the water, it started smoking, then after a few seconds
we saw fire and after that, it exploded.
              Reactants
              - Alkali Metal (Sodium) and Water (H20)
              Product
              - Sodium Oxide and Hydrogen (Na2O + H2)
              Chemical equations
              - Na + H2O =Na2O + H2

Why do these metals react this way?
              - Alkali Metals are Highly Reactive and the reason for that is because these metals only have one electron in their outer shell.

              Neutralisation

              Neutralisation
Neutralisation is a chemical reaction between an acid and a base. Neutralization occurs when no excess hydrogen or hydroxide ions are present in a solution.

              Aim/Objective
              - Our aim was to create different ph levels by using a base (sodium hydroxide), acid (hydrochloric acid) and a universal indicator which resulted in different ph levels and different colours.

              Methods
              - We filled each of the test tubes with a universal indicator, we then put different amounts of sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acids to achieve the different ph levels and colours.

              Results
              - The results were solutions that had different ph levels and different colours according to their level.

              Conclusion
              - The ph colour represented how acidic or alkali our solutions were after adding the sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid to our test tubes filled with a universal indicator.

Music Through time - Live Aid

              Bob Geldof
              - Bob Geldof is an Irish singer-songwriter, he was the frontman for the late '70 to mid-'80s Irish punk rock band the Boomtown Rats. Their most famous song was "I don't like Mondays" and the song was written just after a school shooting had happened in a school in San Diego.

              Midge Ure
              - Midge Ure is a Scottish singer, musician and songwriter. He is a singer involved in several bands and was the frontman for Ultravox. he co-wrote the song "Do they know its Christmas" and it became the second highest-selling single in UK chart history.

              "Do they know it's Christmas"
The song is referring to the people of Africa who are living in poverty and is in famine with no food and no other source or way to produce food. This was all around the Christmas season which is why it said in the song that they might not even know that it's Christmas.

              Lyrics:
It's Christmas time, there's no need to be afraid
At Christmas time, we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty, we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time
But say a prayer, Pray for the other ones
At Christmas time it's hard, but when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window
And it's a world of dread and fear
              Where the only water flowing
Is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring
There are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight thank God it's them instead of you
And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life
              Where nothing ever grows
              No rain nor rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?
              Here's to you
              Raise a glass for everyone
Spare a thought this yuletide for the deprived
If the table was turned would you survive
              Here's to them
              Underneath that burning sun
You ain't gotta feel guilt just selfless
Give a little help to the helpless
Do they know it's Christmas time at all?
              Feed the world
              Feed the world
              Feed the world
              Feed the world
              Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again
              Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again
              Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again
              Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmas time again
              Feed the world
              Feed the world
